“Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it." - Mark Twain
Over the last six months, many of us have gone from sitting on the sidelines and letting our government "happen" to us to taking an active role in standing up for our freedoms. We went to meetings, rallies, marches, called our Rep and Senators, held meetings in our home, wrote postcards--many times, for the first time ever. This week we can bask in remembering that our voices matter, that small actions matter, that being a good citizen matters. Along with the three brave Senators, we can enjoy knowing that we played a small part in staving off an irresponsible bill that would have hurt millions of people and our economy. Obviously, others have been fighting the fight for years or decades.
And of course, there is SO much to do. To save and make the ACA better. To stand up for our LGBTQ brothers and sisters. For our immigrant brothers and sisters. And fellow citizens of color. So much more to do.
For now, let's bask in the knowledge that our voices matter.
This Week’s Successes
We gave Issa all sorts of attention this past week. As one protester noted, "He did not seem like a happy camper." We had two pop-up protests, made the news twice, and we canvassed almost 1400 houses in Issa's district! A special shout-out of gratitude to Reverend Beth Johnson who demonstrated (and was arrested) at the U.S. Capitol with other faith-based leaders (she made a montage on The Rachel Maddow Show).
Tuesday 7/25 rally: Welcome back to Ellen and Reverend Beth! We had an excellent turnout, including speakers on all sorts of issues, from health care to immigration. Fox 5 covered us live. More photos here.
Thursday, July 27: Our Encinitas Unity friends continued their fun and successful weekly Issa Corner Protests at the corner of El Camino and Encinitas Blvd.
Friday 7/28 Pop-Up Health Care Protest: Our pop-up protest on Friday at Issa's office made the CBS local news. Part celebration for defeat of "Skinny Repeal" and part protest to fix the ACA, our protest was loud and clear.
Saturday, July 29: And yes, another pop-up protest once we found out that Issa would be at the opening of the new GOP headquarters. He's not getting the kind of attention he'd like!
Saturday, July 29: CD49 Precinct Walk with Mike Gipson
Amazing turnout for the #flipthe49th precinct walk - we knocked on ~1400 doors! Assembly Member Mike Gipson brought 2 buses of people from L.A. to #Fight4OurHealth to save health care for millions and let people know about Darrell Issa's dangerous health care vote.
