With all that has been going on in our country and in the world, you would think the United States Congress would be busy passing important legislation. However, to the contrary, this has been the most unproductive Congress in decades. And while we are thankful that horrendous bills such as Trumpcare have failed, there are important pieces of legislation that must succeed. So, on Tuesday, let's tell Congress and Darrell Issa:  "Do Your Job!"

Legislative Update

Legislative Section

In the House this week and beyond:

Tuesday - The House is voting on land use bills. One (HR 995) is for the Secretaries of the Interior and Agriculture to amend the terms in regulations to use racially appropriate terms. Yes, that’s right…terms such as “Oriental” “Eskimo” and worse are still in US regulations.

Thursday - HR 3017 - Voting on a bill that would provide money to the EPA to clean up brownfields—sites where presence or potential presence of hazardous substances doesn’t allow for redevelopment.

Tax Bill update -  SENATE VOTE EXPECTED THIS WEEK. As you likely know, the fate of the tax bill now rests in the Senate’s hands. Repealing the Affordable Care Act’s mandate for insurance is still in the Senate bill but could get taken out if enough of us make a ruckus.  Susan Collins has emerged as a pivotal lawmaker in the tax debate, along with Republican Senators John McCain, Lisa Murkowski and Ron Johnson, all of whom are also on the fence or oppose the bill.  Contact each of them by email.

FCC Net Neutrality - The FCC plans to repeal Obama-era rules that kept net neutrality in place. Why it matters to you: communications companies could charge for faster-speed internet connections and determine who gets to see which website. This decision would be bad for small businesses who can’t pay a lot to promote their website and also for citizens (like many of us) who use high-speed internet often in their work and play. i.e. pretty much all of us.  See action below.

Action Items

Lodge an official complaint with the FCC. The more official complaints the better! Alternatively, tweet at Senators who are on the fence about the GOP tax reform plan. Follow this link.  The information is in orange at the to of the page. https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us/signin?return_to=https%3A%2F%2Fconsumercomplaints.fcc.gov%2Fhc%2Fen-us%2Farticles%2F204231404-Open-Internet
