A week has gone by since the Las Vegas shooting and we continue to be profoundly affected by that event. The devastation left by recent hurricanes still needs our attention and support. Jeff Cours read a moving piece at Tuesday's rally. Here are a couple excerpts; you can find his full piece on our website
“Going to pick up my sister. She is inconsolable... Her best friend was shot in Vegas last night. She died this morning. Hold your loved ones tight.” (Quote from Facebook)
What can we do in the face of such events? What should we do? ... One thing is to hold our loved ones tight. ... And to hold our leaders accountable for real leadership.

We have a special opportunity to support a local high school senior and to bring our issues to Issa's D.C. office in November:  "My name is Maddie, I'm a senior in high school and this November I will be attending a social justice advocacy conference in Washington D.C. I am collecting letters from constituents of the 49th district about various social justice issues that effect our community and country that demand strong action and response by Rep. Issa. These letters will be delivered in person, in a meeting with Rep. Issa's D.C. office. Examples of issues discussed in these letters can include but are not limited to: DACA/immigration, gun violence and safety, legislative protections for Special Counsel Mueller, and the Muslim travel ban. Please include your name, email address, zip code, and street address. Please send letters to Please visit here for more information." Thank you, Maddie!

What’s happening in the House this week?

  • HR 378 - Bonuses for Cost-Cutters Act 2017 - Bonuses paid to any federal employees who find ways of saving money in their departments.
  • Three bills to protect whistleblowers.
  • HR 2989 - Frederick Douglass BiCentennial Commission - To establish a commission to plan activities to celebrate the bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Douglass so that we can “ensure that his tireless struggle, transformative words, and inclusive vision of humanity continue to inspire and sustain us.”
  • HR 3243 - FITARA Enhancement Act of 2017 - Issa is involved with this bill and was the sponsor for the original FITARA bill. The bill is essentially allowing the federal government more time to improve the acquisition and management of Federal information technology assets.
